Weather and ocean data#
FairlySoon downloads, selects, regrids, compresses and visualises source data. These adaptations can introduce differences from the original products. A source credit does not imply that the provider endorses FairlySoon or any sailing decision.
NOAA / NWS — GFS#
GFS atmospheric and wave forecasts come from NOAA’s National Weather Service. NWS information is public domain unless marked otherwise. FairlySoon’s processed displays are not official NWS products. See the NWS data-use conditions and disclaimer.
ECMWF — IFS and AIFS#
This service is based on data and products of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). Source: ECMWF Open Data, © 2026 ECMWF, licensed under CC BY 4.0. FairlySoon processes and adapts these data for its tiles, maps and analysis. ECMWF disclaims responsibility for errors, omissions, availability and losses resulting from use; see its terms of use.
Copernicus Marine — currents#
Generated using E.U. Copernicus Marine Service Information: Global Ocean Physics Analysis and Forecast (GLOBAL_ANALYSISFORECAST_PHY_001_024), DOI 10.48670/moi-00016. Source: European Union, Copernicus Marine Service Information or Data (2026), © Mercator Ocean. FairlySoon processes the surface-current fields for its own displays and analysis. Use is governed by the Copernicus Marine licence; see the citation guidance.
Met Office — lightning probabilities (UKMO)#
The lightning layer uses the Met Office Blended Probabilistic Forecast, Global Gridded Probabilities, from its open-data collection. © Crown copyright, Met Office. Licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0. FairlySoon selects the three-hour lightning probabilities and regrids, quantises and styles them. These adapted data are provided under the same licence. They describe forecast probability over an area and interval, not live lightning strikes.
Marine bulletins — GMDSS / WWMIWS#
Marine bulletins are sourced through the WMO Worldwide Met-Ocean Information and Warning Service and credited to their issuing services. FairlySoon parses the bulletins for display and retains source text and links. The overlay may have incomplete coverage; consult the original service. These bulletins are not covered by a blanket FairlySoon Creative Commons licence; consult the originating provider’s terms before republishing.
Map and place names#
OpenStreetMap — coastlines#
Coastline data © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0. FairlySoon uses the coastline and land-polygon downloads from OSM Data to draw land and check routes against coastlines. These are not navigational charts.
FairlySoon projects, simplifies, quantises and tiles the source geometry. Our adapted coastline database is also available under ODbL 1.0. The coastline manifest and land-fill manifest identify the current data versions. Each version provides its tile inventory, attribution, LICENSE.txt, source.json with source fingerprints, and processing-source.tar.gz with the transformation method. Preserve the attribution and ODbL terms when redistributing the data; publicly used derivative databases carry the licence’s share-alike and access obligations. The licence governs the data, not all FairlySoon software or user-created passage plans.
Natural Earth — labels and reefs#
Made with Natural Earth. Its map data are public domain. FairlySoon uses its place labels and displays its reef lines alongside the OSM coastline. The reefs also remain part of route checks. Reef coverage is incomplete.
Place search includes GeoNames, licensed under CC BY 4.0, and Natural Earth. FairlySoon filters, combines and ranks the records for coastal-place search.
What Creative Commons allows#
CC BY 4.0: you may share and adapt the covered material, including commercially, with appropriate credit, a licence link and an indication of changes. Preserve supplied notices and do not imply endorsement.
CC BY-SA 4.0: the same attribution duties apply; when you distribute an adaptation, you must also use the same or a compatible licence. Do not impose additional restrictions that prevent uses the licence permits.
These are summaries. The linked licences govern the covered material, and other rights may still apply. Combining datasets does not remove their individual conditions.
Sharing weather images and derived work#
Identify every source shown, retain its credit and licence, state that FairlySoon processed the data, and include the forecast run and valid time where possible. If you crop, recolour, annotate or otherwise adapt the material, say so. Carry ShareAlike terms forward where applicable. A link to this page helps readers find the sources but does not replace the credits your particular use requires.
Software and type#
FairlySoon is built with open-source projects including React (MIT), TinyBase (MIT), TinyWidgets (MIT) and Lucide (ISC, with MIT-licensed Feather-derived icons). The Inter typeface uses the SIL Open Font License 1.1. Documentation headings and the outlined wordmark use Outfit, licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. These components retain their own copyright and licence notices.
FairlySoon’s own material#
The data and dependency licences above do not automatically license FairlySoon’s own code, writing, branding or interface design. No blanket Creative Commons licence is granted for FairlySoon as a whole on this page. Contact us about permission or a particular reuse; any explicit licence supplied with a file continues to apply.
